*Functional differences:
This operation manual explains circuit operations for Super Audio CD first-generation, SCD-1.  Please also refer to this operation manual
for the circuit operations for first generation SCD-777ES as they are nearly the same. The main differences are as follows.

1.  OVERVIEW
1-1. MAIN FEATURES
(1)  Playing SACDs
This player can play SACDs (three types: single layer, dual layer and hybrid), which are recorded at high sound quality using DSD format,
a new technology. CDs recorded in the conventional PCM format can also be played.
DVDs and video CDs cannot be played, as they are recorded in MPEG format. In addition, CD-ROMs for computers cannot be played.
Note: CD-R playback
Although CD-Rs that have been recorded normally can be played, it might not be possible to play discs that have been recorded poorly,
due to the condition of the CD-R recorder. For this reason, we do not recommend playing CD-Rs.
(2)  Adjusting CD Sound Quality
The player is equipped with a variable control filter of 24-bit accuracy for playing CDs. When conventional CDs are played, five filters
with different isolation characteristics can be selected as desired and sound quality adjusted together with the source and the system.
The variable control filter cannot be used when playing SACDs.
(3)  Remote Control Used for Both CDs and SACDs
The player is provided with a remote control (RM-DS1) that makes it possible to switch the remote control signal between CD1 and CD2.
SACDs use the same remote control code as CDs. In addition, Sony’s standard CD players will respond to the CD1 remote control signal.
Thus, by leaving the command mode selector on the SACD player on CD2, the CD player and SACD player can be controlled separately
with the CD1/CD2 selection switch on the remote control (use CD1 for the CD player and CD2 for the SACD player).
(4)  Display
As a maximum of 255 tracks and 255 indexes can be recorded on one SACD, a three-digit display is used.
Pressing the “TEXT” button after loading a CD TEXT or SACD that has disc names, track names and the like recorded makes it possible
to display the text data. Only the alphanumerics of Western languages can be displayed. Characters for Japanese and similar languages are
not displayed.
If text data has been recorded in multiple languages, “MULTI” will be displayed. Pressing the “LANGUAGE” button at this time will
display language names (“ENGLISH/FRENCH/GERMAN,” etc.), and the text will be displayed if possible. If the text cannot be displayed,
“Other Lang.” will be displayed.

(2)  Digital Sound Output
Although there are optical and coaxial digital output terminals,  only CD sound output is possible. SACD sound cannot be digitally
output.
Digital sound output can be turned ON/OFF with the “DIGITAL OUT” button. When this button is turned OFF, the digital output circuit
will be turned off and signal output itself stopped.
(3)  BALANCED OUT ON/OFF Switch (for the SCD-1 only)
If this switch is turned OFF and the LINE OUT BALANCED terminal is not used, the LINE OUT BALANCED output circuit will be
turned OFF and the sound quality of LINE OUT UNBALANCED output somewhat improved.
1-2. SPECIAL FUNCTIONS
(1) STANDARD and CUSTOM Modes
With the SACD’s DSD format, signals of 20kHz or over can be played. However, transistor damage could result from inputting high-
level, high-frequency signals to the amplifier. The STANDARD mode is thus set when the player is shipped to set a cutoff frequency that
lowers output signals to a level that will not damage a general amplifier.
Only when the player is used in combination with Sony’s TA-E1 preamplifier and TA-N1 power amplifier can CUSTOM mode be
selected, the characteristics of the output signal’s cutoff frequency modified, and music played at even higher sound quality (see Fig. 1).
Do not select CUSTOM mode when using the player with amplifiers other than Sony’s. To prevent amplifier damage resulting from
careless setting, a screw is used to fix the selection switch on STANDARD mode when the player is shipped.
