3-1. Error Codes
MDS-W1 has an error indication function. The circumstances surrounding the main trouble can be conjectured from the error
codes. A history of error codes that have occurred is recorded for each mechanical deck. This error history is recorded in
EEPROM (IC171) within the mechanical decks and will not be erased unless refreshed in test mode.
E01: PTOC unreadable
Content: The TOC recorded by pits in the innermost track on the MD cannot be read.
With the focus operation basically normal, the signals of the TOC area of the inner tracks cannot be read correctly.
Cause:
Sled motor trouble that prevents the disc's inner tracks from being accessed, limit-in switch failure, etc.
E02: UTOC error
Content: The UTOC recorded by groove in the outer tracks of the PTOC cannot be read.
The recorded condition of the UTOC area on the disc is poor, and signals cannot be read correctly. In addition, the
ability to play back recordable discs has deteriorated.
Cause:
The laser power is small for playing recordable discs, or the error rate has worsened owing to optical block
deterioration. When this occurs with a disc that has been recorded using another device, there could conceivably be
trouble with that recording device.
E03: Loading error
Content: When the disc is inserted, the mechanism cannot move to the playback position.
After the position switch has detected that the disc has been inserted, the switch for detecting the movement of the
mechanism to the playback position cannot detect it within a set time.
Cause:
Contact failure of the switch or flexible-board connector or mechanical failure.
E04: Address unreadable
Content: When a recordable disc is played back, the address (ADIP) signal cannot be read within a set time, with the focus
tracking servo circuit normal and the ADIP circuit abnormal.
Cause:
ADIP circuit trouble.
E05: FOK problem
Content: Unstable FOK signal.
Rarely occurs. Handled in the same was as E06.
E06: Focus problem
Content: Disc cannot be detected by focus circuit.
In actual repair sets, this error code is quite frequently recorded.
Cause:
Occurs when optical-block laser emission is abnormal and the focus search operation does not work normally, etc.
This can occur when a disc has been pulled out during loading and loading was done with no disc.
E07: Recording retried
Content: Recording was retried while already in process.
The servo circuit is sometimes disrupted by small dust or scratches on the disc.
Because this can sometimes occur even in normal sets when a disc that is in poor condition is used, it is no cause for
concern.
E08: Recording retry error
Content: Attempting to retry recording while it was already in process stopped the recording process.
Cause:
Dirt on the disc, optical blocks or servo circuit failure.
If this occurs with a specific disc, it will be judged as disc failure.
