As the magnetic field starts to collapse the back emf produced forward biases the diode and the 
energy is returned to the circuit, effectively damping the oscillation, and the beam spot moves back to 
the centre of the CRT in a linear fashion.

As energy is saved by the action of the diode, it is referred to as the Efficiency Diode. 
  
As the beam spot returns to the centre position the next horizontal drive pulse arrives and the process 
continues.
