Introduction
1.1.4 The PAS UNIX print server
The PAS UNIX print server integrates a UNIX server with the PAS 
print tracking environment. This integration is accomplished by 
installing a number of cooperating software components on your 
network. The following table gives an overview of the required 
components:
PAS components run on a UNIX server
SMRemote-
DBServer
• communicates with the Accounting Server service on 
the Windows NT server
SMEditDB
• enables you to set up SMRemoteDBServer and to con-
figure printers
SM print 
interface or 
filter
• wrapper script for the process that communicates with 
the printers
PAS components run on a Windows server
Accounting
Server
• functions as a Windows NT/2000 service
• coordinates the activity of all PAS components
• handles account management requests; controls data-
base access
• calculates charges, assigns them to correct accounts
PAS
Database
• stores information about printing transactions, print-
ing accounts and balances, printers, printer costs, and 
scheduled events
PAS management tools run on a Windows network
System
Manager
Enables the system administrator to:
• configure and monitor Windows server components
• assign costs to printers and copiers
Accounts
Manager
Enables the financial administrator to:
• manage user, department and billing code accounts
• perform account transactions
• produce reports on printer and account activity
• set up automated database maintenance events
