Introduction to Callisto Script

The Callisto Script gives Callisto an extra dimension as a software application. The scripting
gives the ability to customise the software to meet the printing requirements of the user.  This
enhancement changes the way Callisto works and opens up the boundaries of rules based
printing. The following document describes the ease of writing scripts and the way scripts are
implemented.
The purpose of the Script is to define a set of logical rules to be applied to each print job. In
previous versions of Callisto, the rules applied to print jobs were hidden in the application code.
These rules were very rigid and could not be modified easily to cater for new requirements. The
Callisto Script gives the option of using the existing rules; but also gives the ability to modify
them. The Callisto Script allows the printing rules to be customised depending on individual
user’s criteria. This gives Callisto a wider range of flexibility to define rules for printing.
This version of Callisto inherits all the features from the previous versions of Callisto. However,
the decision-making process for the printing rules have been taken out of Callisto Service code
and been placed into script files (*.csf). It is these script files that hold all the printing rules and
can be customised to include new rules. The Callisto Script can only be modified, if the Callisto
AS (Advanced Scripting) version is being used, otherwise the Administrator only has the ability
to only view the Script
The Callisto Configuration Manager is used to define some of the rules from the program’s
interface. This automatically creates a script file, and these rules can be applied to the print jobs.
To define new requirements, the script file can be modified to specify new rules. The Callisto
Configuration manager has a built in script-editing environment that allows script file to be
modified and it’s syntax to be checked. The Callisto Script can then be tested and checked to see
if the script is logically correct.
The Callisto Script consists of a sequence of instructions that are interpreted by the underlying
Callisto code. The Callisto script can use a variety of functions and procedures. These are
defined in the Script API (Application Programming Interface) document. It is these functions
and procedures that give the script its immense capability and allow it to perform efficiently.
