Glossary

The receptacle in which you plug the end of a parallel
interface cable in order to connect a computer and
printer or other device.

The program that enables a computer to send the
printer a print job in PCL (Printer Control Language).

A function of Windows that allows you to easily
install hardware devices (for example, printers, disk
drives, etc.)

A connection through which the computer sends
information to other devices. Parallel ports send data
eight bits at a time and are usually used for printers;
Windows and MS-DOS designate them “LPT1:”
through “LPT9:”.

The orientation of a printed page held with the long
dimension vertical: taller than it is wide. Printing runs
across the shorter dimension.

A power saving mode in which the POWER SAVE
indicator lights up and all other indicators remain in
their prior state. In this condition, the fuser in the
machine is maintained at a low temperature to save
power. The machine warms up more quickly
compared to the auto power shut-off mode.

A language used in many laser printers to describe
how text and graphics appear on the page.

A program that controls how the computer and printer
interact. The printer driver supplies Windows with
information such as descriptions of fonts and features
of the installed printer. Drivers have the filename
extension .DRV.

The working memory of the computer in which
programs and data are temporarily stored while you
use them. Resetting or shutting off the computer
clears all information from RAM. Printing very
complicated documents may require closing other
running programs or adding more RAM to the
computer.

The fineness of lines displayed on a monitor or
printed, measured in dots per inch (dpi). Low-
resolution devices may display or print visibly jagged
images, particularly diagonal lines.

Enlargement or reduction of the original image when
it is printed.

Sending a document to the print queue rather than
directly to the printer. Documents in a print queue are
usually printed in the order received. Spooling frees
the application you are using for other tasks.

Information needed for connection in a network. For
more information, see your network administrator.

A page printed by your printer used to verify its
proper operation. It contains information about your
configuration.

The reservoir which holds the toner.
