Extracting Printer Configuration by using
the Windows Registry & Export Facility
Model Name:
All Printer Models
Pre-requisites:
This is an “Expert” topic, with modifications being made to the Windows
Registry.
Warning:
This procedure should be thoroughly checked in a test environment prior to
its implementation onto a live network.
It is also recommended to backup the complete Registry before attempting
this procedure.
Overview:
Many Network operating systems, such as NetWare 5.1 (NDPS), Windows
NT4 or Windows 2000 Server, allow the distribution and automatic installation
of a printer driver on a users’ workstation.  However, when the printer driver
is added to the Server, and subsequently downloaded it retains its default
configuration setting (i.e. ARPB2a  - 16Mb RAM, no finisher etc)
If the printer driver is distributed to, say 200 workstations, the reconfiguration
of all workstations, to allow feature support, becomes a major administration
task.
Procedure
Within this bulletin the following will be covered.

Setting up the Printer Configuration and exporting the registry setting.
Note:
The procedure is based on a Server (NT4/2000 or NetWare 5 NDPS) that is
providing the Windows 98 PCL5e driver to its workstations. If you have
Windows NT4 clients on a Windows NT4 server or Windows 2000 clients on
a Window 2000 server, this procedure is not required as they will successfully
download the configured printer drivers.

Setting up the Printer Configuration and exporting this registry setting
1.  In a test environment, on a Windows 98 workstation, connect to the server that is sharing the
desired printer and download the print driver to the workstation. (This topic is covered in Network
Support Bulletins 005, 020, 017 for NT, W2K and NW5 respectively). Check the configuration of
this downloaded printer driver and confirm that it has the default settings.
2.  Now, change the configuration of the printer driver to the desired configuration of the copier/
printer, i.e.alter the ARPB2 memory to 80MB, add the LCC and 3 tray finisher etc.
3.  Now click on StartRun and type REGEDIT. You are now within the Windows Registry Editor.
4.  Navigate to the following registry Key, as shown in the screen shot below.
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\control\Print\Printers\The Printer Name
Highlight the DefaultDevMode key as below.
5.  Now from the menu, click Registry then Export Registry File. Give the file a recognisable name
and save the resultant Registry File to the Desktop.

6.  To test that the Registry File works correctly, reset the printer driver to its default configuration
settings and then double click on the saved registry file. This saved registry key should be
imported in to the registry and the driver should now be fully configured. Check that the
configuration has now changed to your required settings.
In order to utilise this exported registry file please now read NIS Bulletin 045 Distribution of a
Configured Printer Driver from Novell NetWare 5.x and NIS Bulletin 046 Distribution of a
Configured Printer Driver from Windows NT4/2000.
