Invalid Recipient 
 
Symptom:
  
Mail gets returned to the "reply-to" address with an error message. 
 
The invalid recipient can be shown in a couple of ways.  
1. 
You may get a "User Unknown" error if the recipient's account does not really exist.  
2. 
You may get an error stating that you are not allowed to send that recipient an e-mail 
message (This can happen if your mail administrator has restricted who can send messages 
to the internet). 
3. 
If the domain being sent to does not exist. 
 
Solution:  
Because there are a variety of causes of this, there is no one fix-all solution, however, it is 
recommended that the "reply-to" address is set to an account that someone can check to find out 
what type of error has occurred.  Most of the time, invalid recipient errors do not create an error at the 
time that the scanner sends the e-mail. 
 
Attachment Filters 
 
Symptom:  
Mail gets received but no scan is attached, mail gets returned to "reply-to" address with an error 
message, or mail simply never arrives at destination. 
 
This occurs when the mail administrator has filtered out mail attachments.  The mail administrator 
may do this to prevent viruses from entering the network. 
 
Solution:  
Either have the mail administrator unblock attachments sent by the scanner, or use the Scan-to-FTP 
and the "e-mail URL link" options of the scanner. 
 
Domain Lookup Failures 
 
This can encompass a variety of issues. 
1. 
If your e-mail server is entered by name rather than IP address in the configuration of the 
scanner, the DNS setting on the scanner must be correct and the DNS server must be able to 
resolve that mail server's name to it's correct IP address. 
2. 
Also, if the mail server requires that the relay client's IP address be resolvable (in this case 
the scanner's IP address), the scanner must be listed in the DNS server that the mail server is 
using, or in the "hosts" file of the mail server. 
3. 
If the mail server further requires that the "sender domain" be resolvable, the "reply-to" 
address set in the scanner must have a valid domain name. 
 
Solution:  
Make sure all IP addresses are listed in the DNS and that the "reply-to" address has a valid internet 
domain name, or specify everything by IP address.
