Denied Relaying
Symptom:
550 5.7.1 Unable to relay for <email-address>
Or
550 5.7.1 <email-address>... Relaying denied
(symptom description varies from mail server to mail server)
When the network scanner creates an e-mail to be sent, it contacts the mail server through port 25
(the SMTP port) and announces itself, it's e-mail address, and the recipient's e-mail address.
"Relaying-Denied" messages will occur if:
(symptom description varies from mail server to mail server)
When the network scanner creates an e-mail to be sent, it contacts the mail server through port 25
(the SMTP port) and announces itself, it's e-mail address, and the recipient's e-mail address.
"Relaying-Denied" messages will occur if:
1.
the IP or hostname of the network scanner is not in the list of acceptable hosts/IP addresses
to relay for, AND
to relay for, AND
2.
the recipient is not handled by the SMTP server that the scanner has contacted.
Solution:
Add the scanner to the list of IP addresses or hostnames accepted as relay clients.
Invalid Sender
Symptom:
Mail server sends error after the "mail from'" command is issued.
A mail administrator (or the default options of the mail server) may require that the "sender" or "reply-
to" address be a REAL e-mail address. This prevents people from anonymously sending unwanted e-
mails to people.
Solution:
Set the "reply-to" address of the scanner to be someone's real e-mail address, or create an e-mail
account for the scanner. The best solution is to create an account for the scanner and FORWARD
that e-mail account to a real person.
This makes the e-mail show up in the recipient's mailbox as being from the scanner, and allows any
bounced e-mails to go to a chosen administrator instead of getting stuck in the mail queue without a
destination.
