Overview

Over the last few years the specification for Chip & PIN has been developed by the major
Credit/Debit card suppliers. The system designed to reduce fraud will be introduced fully in
the UK on 1
st
January 2005. At this time any retailer not using a Chip & PIN device will
become liable for all fraudulent transactions, as apposed to the Credit Card companies.

In light of these changes to Point of Sale operation, Sharp Electronics (UK) Ltd intend to
develop a number of solutions to address as many different environments as possible. This
document details the configurations that it is intended to develop before the January 1
st

2005.

After this time it is recognised that other configurations may be required, these will be
addressed in the future.

It should also be noted that for the following options 2 & 2a that connect to Commidea, any
terminal recommended by Commidea for connection can be used.

It is however intended initially to use the following terminals for the configurations listed

Option 1
Verifone SC5000
Options 2 & 2a  Verifone SC3750
Option 3
Verifone SC3750

  SC3750
     SC5000

The reason it is required to offer two terminals is due to accreditation rules introduced by the
banks. If the POS/ECR takes any part in the Chip & PIN transaction process it is necessary to
have each customer accredited, this is the case with option 1 (This means an estate of 50
sites needs one bank accreditation and also an estate of one site needs the same bank
accreditation. The cost of this accreditation is high, however the solution does provide a fully
integrated solution.
