Service bulletin # H/K9803   April 1998

Warranty labor rate: MAJOR repair

 To:
    All harman/kardon Service Centers

 Models:  AVR55

 Subject:  Complaints Related to Software

In the event you receive an AVR55 with one or more of the symptoms listed below, upgrade the software
by replacing microprocessors IC301 and IC810.
IC301 is located on Front PCB (PCB-3), IC810 is located on AC-3 PCB (PCB-7).

Unintended shut-down while in TV source mode and active video source is NOT connected to the AVR55:
New software default is: AUTO OFF. With this upgrade AVR55 will no longer shut down.

Noise while a test CD or Music CD with Pre-Emphasis is played through the Digital Connection:
This audible noise was present when playing a CD with Pre-Emphasis through the digital coax and while in
surround modes: Theater, Hall, Stadium or Church.  (Pro Logic and 3 Stereo modes were OK).
With this upgrade, this noise is no longer audible.

No Speaker Level Calibration for Front Left and Front Right channels:
After activating Test Tone cycle, only Center, Left Rear and Right rear speakers could be calibrated.
With this upgrade, Front Left and Front Right channels can be calibrated.

Phono button on the remote control does not switch receiver to Phono source mode:
Corrected by this upgrade.

Downmix function: When the number of decoder outputs is less than the number of available channels in the
Dolby Digital program (such as for example during headphone listening) downmix feature is not available:
This upgrade enables downmixing under this condition.

Volume tracking: Maximum level of main volume control is influenced by setting of rear channels:
After the upgrade, the two volume levels no longer affect each other.

NOTE: Early versions of the AVR55 owner’s manual on Page 26 may mention a System Reset feature.
This was incorrect; the System Reset feature is not available on this receiver.
