Service bulletin # HK2008-01  February 2008

Warranty labor rate: MINOR repair

To:  All harman/kardon Service Centers

Model: AVR247, AVR347, AVR350

Subject: Noise Artifacts in 1080p Video

In the event you receive an AVR247, AVR347, or AVR350 with the following complaint: “when using a
video source, output 1080p, there are video artifacts resembling blue/white sparkles or dots,
particularly during dark backgrounds, with on-screen movement”, perform the following procedure:

Synopsis: A resistor and capacitor in parallel should be added to the HDMI board in two places.
Note: RoHS-
rated* soldering equipment will be required.

1)  Remove the top cover.
2)  Remove the HDMI board at the rear of the unit; there are screws at the rear, a header to unplug, a
single molex connector, and there may be one cable tie.
3)  Locate the two areas on the bottom side of the PCB where the following parts should be added:
Location #1 and #2: 15pF cap (ceramic/50V) & 220kΩ (resistor 1/8 Watt/5%)
Attach both in parallel, in both locations, JBL part# 140-50N2-150J-RC and JBL part# 299-220K-RC.
See page 2 for details.
4)  Replace HMDI board, all connectors, screws and cable tie.  Replace top cover.
5)  Test unit to try and duplicate the complaint.  If the original media is not available for testing, use the
following method:
a. You will need a DVD player capable of and set to 1080p via the HDMI cable, connected to the
AVR receiver.
b. You will need DVD title “Crank”.  Select Mulit-CH PCM 6.1 audio format in the DVD’s menu.
c.  Important: Turn on the AVR receiver and let it reach full operating temperature.  The symptom
may not show up when the unit is cold.
d.  Navigate in the movie to the following areas where the problem has found to be noticeable:
Time:  Chapter 10,   0:54:08 - 0:54:12
Time:  Chapter 10,   0:56:13 - 0:56:17
