PHOTO SENSOR TROUBLE
Please read notes highlighted in RED

Desk
MX-DE12/DE13/DE14/ DE20, MX-DE15/DE16, MX-DEX8/DEX9
2. Symptom:
Due to the reduction of the light amount from the photo sensor used for Paper Feed/Transport
system and Drum phase detection, the following troubles have been observed
(1) Paper Jam in the area around the paper feed section of the cassette ~ Transport section of
Desk/Main unit until PPD1, and also in Document Feeder)
(2) “Close the right side cover.” message is not displayed.
(3) “Add paper” message does not disappear or the paper cannot be lifted.
(4) Drum phase sensor trouble “F2-50~53” occurs.
3. Cause
The light reduction at the photo sensor is attributed to a resin change during the production of the
wafer of the LED chip. The characteristic of the light being received by the wafer is uneven and is
out of specification. On the following two types of photo sensors in the list below, the resin which is
used in molding the element (chip) was changed in the middle of production, and the defective
chips were mixed with non-defective chips. The defective chips have a smaller opening in which
light passes through and caused a reduction of light being received on the wafer of the sensors.
The old style 1A and 1S type sensors have no markings on them and it is impossible to distinguish
the good sensors from the defective ones.

4. Item of change
To prevent the light reduction at the photo sensor the photo sensor has been changed.
1. Identification of Old/new photo sensor (1A type)
1) There is no marking or engraved mark on the old photo sensor.
2) A red marking is placed on the connector side and an engraved marking is on the opposite
side of the connector on the new photo sensor.
Marking on the connector
Location where the marking is engraved
2. Identification of old/new photo sensor (1S type)
1) No marking is engraved on the old photo sensor.
2) A marking is engraved both on the connector side and the opposite side on the new photo
sensor.
Location where the marking is engraved
5. Field Action
Please replace the photo sensor in advance, based on the specific production month
(see the following list) that the resin was changed and defective chips were mixed.
